We booked for a 4 night & day multi-day hike at High 5 (or the old Num-Num) trails for March 2023. There is also a 5-day, 3-day trails as well. We opted to do the following routes: Pongola Express > Aloe Kaya > Mount Komati > Candlewood > Pongola Express. All in all about 32km over 4 days. The trail is mostly well marked with one or two instances that we had to take a well educated guess. That said, Pieta, the owner, was very open to hear any critique and improvements from the hikers.
It is rated as an moderate hike, but after completing the trail myself, I would change that to moderate, but technical, or just difficult. We had a few instances were we had to go on hands and foot, slippery areas, rocky to the point of nearly mountain climbing. When it rains, a word of warning, rather don’t do the trail as some parts are dangerous as it is when dry. Adding rain would cause issues.
That said, man, this trail is beautiful and has some historical parts to it as well. Accommodation huts are brilliant and they are equipment with either donkey hot water or electricity based geysers. They have an honesty shop/bar which is pure luxury when completing any of their routes. It is well stocked with beers, ciders, spirits, cold drinks, snacks and chocolate.
Here are some photos of our adventure. If you wondered who I am in the photos below, I’m the grey/white bearded one with the glasses 🙂
